[EXTENDED to Apr 1] The National Personal Finance and Economics Challenges: CEE’s Flagship Competitions

UPDATE: ALL the CHALLENGES have been extended through Wednesday, April 1st.

Are you looking for a way to bring economic and financial concepts to life in your classroom? The Council for Economic Education (CEE) offers two premier competitive opportunities—the National Personal Finance Challenge (NPFC) and the National Economics Challenge (NEC). These competitions provide students with an authentic platform to demonstrate their mastery of complex concepts while competing for national recognition.

Why Participate?

Beyond the thrill of competition, these challenges serve as powerful “authentic assessments.” They move beyond traditional testing by allowing students to apply classroom learning to real-world scenarios. Both competitions are designed to align with national standards for economics and financial literacy, ensuring that your participation supports your existing curriculum goals.

Understanding the Challenges

The National Personal Finance Challenge (NPFC)

The NPFC focuses on the essential skills students need to navigate their financial futures. Participants are tested on their knowledge of:

  • Earning income and protecting wealth.
  • Budgeting and money management.
  • Saving and investing.
  • The smart use of credit and debt.
The National Economics Challenge (NEC)

The NEC is the only national competition of its kind, testing students on their understanding of:

  • Microeconomics: Individual and business decision-making.
  • Macroeconomics: National and global economic trends.
  • International Economics and Current Events.

Competition Format and Eligibility

Who Can Compete? The competitions are open to middle and high school students. Whether you teach in a public, private, or charter school, you can register a team to represent your institution.

The Path to the Finals:

  1. Registration: Teachers register their teams through the EconEdLink portal.
  2. State-Level Testing: Teams typically begin with an online round conducted at the state level.
  3. National Semi-Finals: Top-scoring teams from each state advance to the national semi-finals.
  4. National Finals: The highest-ranking teams in the country compete in a high-stakes “Quiz Bowl” or case study presentation for the national title.

Key Logistics for Teachers

To help you prepare your students, CEE provides a comprehensive suite of resources, including practice tests, lesson plans, and coaching guides. Here is what you need to know to get started:

  • Registration Process: Sign up via EconEdLink to gain access to the teacher dashboard.
  • Test Structure: Competitions typically involve a mix of multiple-choice rounds and, for finalists, oral presentations or rapid-fire “Quiz Bowl” rounds.
  • Scoring Mechanisms: Points are awarded for accuracy and, in later rounds, the depth of analysis in case study solutions.
  • Key Dates: Regional and state-level testing usually begins in early spring, culminating in the National Finals in late spring. (Check the official CEE calendar for this year’s specific deadlines.)

Bring the Challenge to Your School

Participating in these flagship competitions is more than just a contest; it’s an opportunity to empower students with the confidence and knowledge they need to succeed in the modern economy.
